Konjugation des Modalverbs can mit Ersatzformen
Das Modalverb can bildet die Zeiten mit Ersatzformen. Hier finden Sie eine komplette Übersicht. Kurz zu den Besonderheiten:
- Das Verb hat kein Progressive [Pg].
- Die Ersatzform ist to be able to.
- Das Gerund ist being able to.

Besondere Bedeutungen
could
Die Form could heißt manchmal „konnte“ und manchmal „könnte“. Die deutsche Form könnte ist Konjunktiv, drückt also so etwas wie Möglichkeit oder Wahrscheinlich aus. Im Englischen gibt es fast keinen Konjunktiv mehr, die Modalverben helfen, diese Bedeutung auszudrücken.
Man kann die Form could als das simple past von can verwenden, aber wenn man Fähigkeit anstelle von Möglichkeit ausdrücken möchte, ist die Ersatzform to be able to die bessere Wahl.
- Could you bake a cake? Könntest du bitte einen Kuchen backen?
- She could bake when she was six. Sie konnte mit sechs Jahren schon backen.
- She was not able to bake at all. Sie hatte nicht die Fähigkeit zu backen.
Could have
Die Form could have sieht aus wie eine Zeitform, hat aber mehr modale Bedeutung als temporale, in etwa wie der deutsche Konjunktiv II „hätte tun können“. Sie bezieht sich nur auf die Vergangenheit.
- I could have done it, but I didn't feel like it. Ich hätte das tun können, hatte aber keine Lust dazu.
